This story hits my heart. I met an African woman in my neighbourhood years ago, who came to Canada as a refugee from Sudan. She arrived as a single parent with her own children and her brother's children, for a total of nine kids. Her husband had been murdered, as had her brother and his wife. She fled with eight kids - she was pregnant at the time, and that baby was born in flight - and walked to Uganda, where they were in a refugee camp for six years. The little one never knew a different life than the refugee camp until they were accepted into Canada. I was staggered by how filled with joy and gratitude she was and is, how hard she has worked and how much she has achieved. It's humbling, and even embarrassing to see how she thanks God multiple times each day for the things I've taken for granted. She inspires me to my core. Thank you for sharing your family's story.
